A Sky Beyond the Storm
A Sky Beyond the Storm is Sabaa Tahir’s thrilling finale to her An Ember in the Ashes series. Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory, or to an unimaginable doom. Deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life, and love, he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must take on a mission that could save, or destroy, all that he knows.
Tahir did an amazing job weaving together Laia, Elias, and the Blood Shrike’s perspectives to complete this highly-anticipated book. I especially liked how she interspersed the Nightbringer’s story throughout so readers could better understand how he came to be the Nightbringer. Tahir made her villain relatable and although I’m glad he was ultimately defeated, I still sympathized with him.
Laia and Elias ultimately ending up engaged was the best possible conclusion to their four-book romance. It’s fitting that Laia’s mother took over the role of Soul Catcher, giving her a chance to come to terms with her past, while Elias got the chance to have a future with Laia. I didn’t have much hope at the end of Tahir’s third book, A Reaper at the Gates, but I should have known she wouldn’t disappoint me in the romance department.
Although I know Tahir had a reason for the Blood Shrike losing her entire family (minus her nephew) and the man she loved, I still felt heartbroken reading the Blood Shrike’s chapters as she dealt with such pain. The Blood Shrike’s loss mirrored Laia’s, which I found interested. Tahir, of course, left a bit of romantic intrigue at the end of Sky for the Blood Shrike, and I do hope she does get a happy ending. She deserves it.
A Sky Beyond the Storm was a jaw-dropping conclusion to Tahir’s fantastic series.
A Sky Beyond the Storm Rating: ★★★★
