The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, Addie LaRue makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, a dazzling adventure that plays out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as Addie learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. Everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.
V.E. Schwab’s latest book absolutely blew me away. Following Addie through the years as she witnesses history playing out before her was incredible. She found the cracks in her curse and does the best she can to make an impact on the world, even if it’s through other people, specifically artists. For someone who can’t even write her name without it disappearing, I can’t imagine how liberating it would be to see herself in a painting several decades later, hanging in a museum, or a book about her life, sitting on a shelf, as it does at the end of this book.
I honestly wanted this book to just continue on forever. I milked every sentence that I could, trying to make it last just one more hour. But of course, all good things come to an end, and although I would have liked Addie to have her happily-ever-after with Henry, I know why Schwab made the choices she did with the ending. I like to think Addie is biding her time, waiting for the day when Luc grows weary of her and she’s truly free to live her life.
Schwab did an amazing job working out the rules for Addie’s curse. How does a woman who can’t own anything stay clothed? How does she eat when she can’t earn money? There are so many complicated questions that Schwab worked out in a believable way. Even though Henry didn’t exactly approve of Addie’s way of doing things, she had to survive for 300 years by her wits alone. She did what she had to do.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue tells the story of a woman determined to live her life on her terms, even if it means making a deal with the devil.
