Pax: Journey Home
In Pax: Journey Home, it’s been a year since Peter and his pet fox, Pax, have seen each other. Pax and his mate, Bristle, have welcomed a litter of kits they must protect in a dangerous world. Meanwhile Peter—newly orphaned after the war, wracked with guilt and loneliness—leaves his adopted home with Vola to join the Water Warriors, a group of people determined to heal the land from the scars of the war. When one of Pax's kits falls desperately ill, he turns to the one human he knows he can trust. And no matter how hard Peter tries to harden his broken heart, love keeps finding a way in.
I have a soft spot for foxes, so any book with these creatures as the main character calls my name. Imagine my delight to find this sequel to a book I enjoyed last year! This heartfelt story, combined with the beautiful images inside, drew me in just as quickly as the original Pax. I must admit, I didn’t think Pax needed a sequel, but Pennypacker’s continuation of Pax and Peter’s story offered a great resolution to their tale.
Peter went through so much in Pax that it makes sense in Journey Home that he seemed quite a different boy than the one left at the end of the original book. Scared to love, scared of finding a new home, Peter closes himself off to everyone. His journey with the Water Warriors was such a turning point for him. It gave him the opportunity to have someone “sliver” into his heart, which is just what Pax’s kit does.
I was so glad Pax had made a life for himself with Bristle and her brother. It was clear his three kits meant the world to him, but he had a special place in his heart for the vixen. It was devastating to read Pax decide to leave her with Peter. Although he lost his child, he knew, and the reader knew, she would be safe with Peter, just as Pax had been safe all those years with Peter. I’d like to think one day she’ll meant Pax again, even if it’s just in passing. Just so he knows she’s thriving.
Pax: Journey Home is a heartwarming story about chose family and the healing power of love.
Pax: Journey Home Rating: ★★★★
