The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl
After their thrilling European escapades rescuing Lucinda van Helsing, Mary Jekyll and her friends return home to discover that their friend and kitchen maid Alice has vanished— and so has their friend and employer Sherlock Holmes! As they race to find Alice and bring her home safely, they discover that Alice and Sherlock’s kidnapping are only one small part of a plot that threatens Queen Victoria, and the very future of the British Empire. Can Mary, Diana, Beatrice, Catherine, and Justine save their friends—and save the Empire?
The thrilling conclusion to Goss’ The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club was a wonderful read. With the cliff hanger ending from the second book, I had high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint. I liked how Lucinda van Helsing rejoined the Athena Club to help the ladies find their missing friend and fellow “monster” Alice. Goss added an interesting twist with Alice’s story; I wouldn’t have expected her to be a powerful mesmerist! Now, though, she truly fits in with the other members of the Athena Club.
I may or may not have cackled when the seven alchemists were destroyed; they deserved what was coming to them! And their destruction added another twist: the introduction of a resurrected Egyptian high priestess who was determined to rule the British Empire. This put the Athena Club on the path of saving Queen Victoria, which was quite the high-stakes adventure. Goss knows how to keep her readers guessing!
Without a doubt, my favourite part of the book was when Mary Jekyll was reunited with Sherlock Holmes. It’s been obvious from the first book that the two shared a connection, but readers were finally rewarded for their patience with a romantic scene. I could certainly use a short story or novella about Mary and Sherlock. Although I’m sure not much has changed for the two; Mary might just be spending a bit of extra time “working” at Sherlock’s!
The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl is an action-packed conclusion that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl Rating: ★★★★
