Small Favors
In Erin A. Craig’s latest book Small Favors, Ellerie Downing lives in the quiet town of Amity Falls in the Blackspire Mountain range. To this day, visitors are few and rare. But when a supply party goes missing, some worry that the monsters that once stalked the region have returned. As fall turns to winter, more strange activities plague the town. They point to a tribe of devilish and mystical creatures who promise to fulfill the residents' deepest desires, however grand and impossible, for just a small favor.
Craig did another amazing job creating a tight-knit family unit that I spent the whole book rooting for. The Downings are part of an isolated community where family is everything; the bonds between the Downing siblings run deep, but especially so with Ellerie and her twin brother. When their parents must leave Amity Falls so their mother can receive treatment, Ellerie and her sisters work so hard to stay afloat during the difficult winter months.
However, I do have two complaints: I wish Ellerie could have made up with her twin, and we would know if the sisters were ever reunited with their parents. I like to believe they found them in the city and decided to stay and make a new life away from Amity Falls.
I wasn’t surprised at how well Craig wrote another romance. Her first book showed her romantic prowess, and she didn’t disappoint in Small Favors. The ending for Ellerie and her beau was perfect; he was free from his bargain and the couple could start their new adventure together.
I was surprised at the destruction of Amity Falls at the end of the book. Part of me wondered if Ellerie would be able to save it, but it’s clear her loyalties laid with her family. It was too late to save the village and its inhabitants, but at least she was able to rescue her loved ones and make it out of the Falls alive.
Small Favors is a hauntingly beautiful story that readers who enjoy gothic horror won’t want to put down.
Small Favors Rating: ★★★★
