The Jasmine Throne
Tasha Suri’s The Jasmine Throne is the start of a new trilogy set in a world inspired by the history and epics of India, in which a captive princess and a maidservant in possession of forbidden magic become unlikely allies on a dark journey to save their empire from the princess' traitor brother.
Suri created an amazing setting for her characters. It almost became its own character, supporting Priya the maidservant as she worked to regain access to her full powers to help her people. I can’t wait to see what Suri does with this world she’s created in the next book.
The Jasmine Throne was told through a variety of perspectives, but of the main two (Priya and Malini), I liked reading Priya’s chapters more. She changed so much from the first few chapters to the end of the book. I loved watching her growth, and her romance with Malini. I hope in the second book there’s more of that to come, even though Priya and Malini are on two separate journeys now. I’m sure Suri will find a way to have their paths cross!
Although Malini wasn’t my favourite character, I love that Suri had her become the leader of the rebellion against her dictator brother. It was clear throughout the book that she was passion and spirit behind the rebellion, and it was her the others had put their faith in, not her second brother. I hope to see more of that fighting spirit in the next book. I can’t wait to see the siblings clash.
The Jasmine Throne is a moving story about two women carving out their place in their world, who will do whatever it takes to save their people. Highly recommend it for fantasy lovers who are looking for a non-European setting!
The Jasmine Throne Rating: ★★★★★
