Modern Faerie Tales
Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself as an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms--a struggle that could very well mean her death.
Modern Faerie Tales is a special bind-up edition of Holly Black’s books Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside. Tithe and Ironside focus on Kaye, while Valiant is set in the same world, but is about Valerie, a young runaway who gets mixed up in the faerie world. Characters who are introduced in Valiant do make an appearance in Ironside.
Out of the three stories, I enjoyed Ironside the most. Kaye has to overcome countless obstacles in order to save her family, friends, and the fae king she loves. She manages to carve out a place for herself in the mortal world and the fae kingdom. I love that she doesn’t have to sacrifice a part of herself in order to keep both places that mean so much to her.
Just as with her book The Darkest Part of the Forest, Black connects these fae kingdoms to the ones in her The Folk of the Air series. I visibly grinned when I realized who Kaye’s fae consort was from The Cruel Prince. I highly recommend reading all of these books in order to get the full picture of the magical world Black has created over the years.
This special bind-up is a chunky 785 pages and although it took a few days to get through it, it was worth every page! I also love the cover design. So creative and colourful!
The Modern Faerie Tales Rating: ★★★★
