Namesake
Namesake, the sequel to Adrienne Young’s amazing Fable, starts where the first book ends, Fable trapped on a notorious thug’s ship, bound for who knows where. To get to her intended destination, she must help him to secure a partnership with Holland, a powerful gem trader who is more than she seems. As Fable descends deeper into a world of betrayal and deception, she learns that the secrets her mother took to her grave are now putting the people Fable cares about in danger. If Fable is going to save them, then she must risk everything—including the boy she loves and the home she has finally found.
It's not often I love a sequel as much as the original, but it’s the case with Young’s latest book. So far, every book I’ve read by her has been incredible. She has a way of writing that really immerses a reader into the main character’s life. You feel as if you’re walking in their shadow. It makes it almost impossible to put any book of hers down. Such was the case with Namesake. Young did a wonderful job tying up all the lose ends from Fable while creating a riveting story that kept me guessing until the very last page.
One of my most favourite parts of this series, not just this book, is how Young wrote the complex relationship between Fable and her father Saint. Due to the dangers of being a pirate’s daughter, Fable was never acknowledged, at least publicly, as Saint’s child. That secret drew a line in the sand between them. It took two books for Fable to finally gain the acknowledgement she so desperately needed from her father. She was able to make peace with Saint, and I suspect if there’s a third book ever written about Fable, her relationship with Saint will look much different than it did in Fable or Namesake.
It was interesting to read how Young described the continued romance between Fable and West. They had an incredibly complicated relationship, to say the least. He loved her so much, he literally burned a path (of ships) as he hunted her down after she was kidnapped. He was willing to do anything to get her back, even if that meant putting his crew in danger. Their stubbornness set the couple at odds multiple times throughout the story, but ultimately the two were able to come together and get their happily-ever-after, even if it was on a merchant ship bound for new adventures.
Namesake is the thrilling conclusion to Young’s high-stakes adventure on the high seas. Readers won’t want to miss the rest of Fable’s journey.
